Jovan Martinez is the third confirmed recruit who will be on the 2009 St. Thomas men’s soccer roster. Martinez was captain of both his Piper High School soccer team, as well as his U-18 club squad. Jovan is described by his coaches as being a “tenacious defender,” and one who “terrorizes opposing forwards.” Martinez played all of last season with a sprained ankle, and still managed to start every game. His coaches credit him with being very level-headed during matches, reflected in the fact that he was neither cautioned nor carded all of last season. Martinez was team MVP at Piper his sophomore year and was also named sportsman of the year in 2008, among other accolades. Head coach Felix Mats welcomed the addition of another strong defensive player to his squad, and said that the addition of Martinez will create further competition on the roster for next season.
