MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Men’s Basketball team began postseason play Tuesday night by facing Warner University in the first round of the Sun Conference Tournament. The Bobcats surrendered a 5-point lead with 30 seconds remaining, and were ousted 69-70.
It was a tale of two halves Tuesday as Warner led for the majority of the first half and took a 30-25 lead heading into the break. STU rallied in the second and grabbed the lead just 5 minutes in. The Bobcats built that lead up to 9 and appeared to be in control, but the Royals weren’t done yet.
Warner continued to chip away at the Bobcat lead and hit a 3-pointer following a pair of made free-throws from
Antonio Jones to bring the lead to 2 with 30 seconds remaining. Warner fouled
Tracy Razz, who missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 opportunity and then made an untimely foul to put the Royals on the free-throw line. Warner hit the first shot but missed the second, grabbed the offensive board and put it back in to take a 69-70 lead with 1 second on the clock. Kristaps Brencans threw up a prayer that did not fall and the Bobcats saw their season come to an end.
Antonio Jones once again led the game in scoring with 30, while dishing 6 assists and forcing 3 steals. Jerell Coakley scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
Tracy Razz also put up 11 points but couldn’t hit the final free-throw to all but clinch the victory. STU beat the Royals in assists (13-9) and turnovers (6-17) but lost the rebounding battle that led to their demise (30-39). The Bobcats finish the season 11-16 (7-10 TSC).
