Andres Ibarz allowed only 2 runs in 7 innings against Fla. Southern Saturday
MIAMI, Fla.- The Bobcat Baseball team faced inner-city rival Barry Univ. Thursday and beat the NCAA D-II opponent 8-7. STU jumped out to a 7-2 lead after three innings. The Bobcats held on despite a 5-run rally from the Buccaneers in the sixth. Victor Madrazo and Nestor Rincon led the Bobcats with 2 and 3 RBIs, respectively. Jeff Lara recorded the win in four innings of relief.
The weekend matchup pitted the Bobcats against #2 NCAA D-II Fla. Southern in three games, one Friday and a doubleheader Saturday. The Bobcats put themselves in position to win each game, but fell short in all three. Friday night, STU found themselves down 4-3 midway through the fifth when they scored three runs to go up 6-4. Chris Cuadra relieved Anthony Perez in the sixth, retaining the lead, but the relief from there on surrendered nine more runs. The Bobcats fell 13-7.
The first of game of the Saturday doubleheader proved to be a slugfest with 28 total runs scored. Again, the Bobcats found themselves with a lead, up 11-3 through six. Unfortunately, the Mocs got hot late and scored 12 runs in the final three innings. The final game of the series was much more defense-oriented. The Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of 5th at 2-2. Andres Ibarz pitched seven complete innings and handed the reigns to Victor Madrazo in the 8th. Madrazo surrendered the final run and the Bobcats fell, 3-2.
STU comes out at 1-3 for the week despite their solid play. The Bobcats will go to Nova Tuesday for a 6 PM game.
