MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.— The STU women's soccer team faced off against the seventh ranked team in the country, the Northwood University Seahawks, Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field and found themselves on the wrong end of 3-0 result. Hellen Lynskey turned in a stellar performance for Northwood notching a goal and two assists as she became the single-season points leading in Northwood history.
STU was visibly off their game from the get go and couldn't seem to find the rhythm that saw them reel off five straight victories before Tuesday's defeat.
“They wanted it more today and our girls didn't play the way they normally play” remarked assistant head coach Lito Garro. “When you're not discipline or not staying in your formation and you're not playing the game plan this is the kind of results you're going to get.”
Northwood was able to control the center of the pitch the entire afternoon with the physical play of Lynskey and central midfield partner Amy Vaughn.
“It falls back to recognizing your opponent. They are much bigger and much more physical and we played right in to their hand” Garro continued.
Melony Poviones had her ability to create handcuffed by the physical midfield duo of Northwood. At times Poviones was neutralized to such an extent that she would have to retreat from her attacking midfield role up the pitch all the way to the back four just to get a couple touches on the ball.
Northwood got the scoring going early when Vaughn played Lynskey through with a ball over the STU back line, with Lynskey calmly beating
Ariana Lorenzo in the 13
th minute. Despite the physicality, STU was able to keep Northwood at bay the rest of the first half. They would strike again early in the 2
nd half with two goals in a eight minute span. In the 52
nd minute Elina Landeskog added a goal off of a rebound and Julia Hassall tucked away a second one-on-one in the 60
th minute with both assists coming Lynskey's boot.
The Bobcats have a week of rest before heading into the conference tournament. If the standings stay the way they are STU will host Southeastern in the first round of The Sun Conference tournament.
