MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - No. 3 seed St. Thomas (11-6, 7-3 TSC) advanced to The Sun Conference Tournament semifinals with a 3-0 victory over No. 6 seed Southeastern (10-7, 5-5 TSC).
Alexa Rivera and
Sharon Tejeda provided two first half goals to give the Bobcats an early lead and
Kortney Hinden added an insurance goal in the second to seal the Fire's fate.
The Bobcats came out determined to reverse the outcome of their last matchup against Southeastern, a 2-1 defeat. They immediately established themselves as the aggressor and attacked the Fire keeper, Kaitlyn Romero. In the 5th minute,
Jannel Johnson had her shot ricochet off Romero's hands, but Rivera gathered the deflection and blasted the ball into the net.
A foul in the 16th minute yielded St. Thomas another scoring opportunity, but
Amyah Banks was not able to convert the penalty kick.
St. Thomas would not relent on the idea of adding another goal before half. In the 44th minute, Tejeda booted the ball from 28 yards out. A thing of beauty, the lob sailed over Romero's hands to give the Bobcats a 2-nil lead.
The Bobcats continued to dominate the tempo in the second half. As in the first half, second-shot opportunities would prove be Southeastern's undoing. In the 70th minute, Banks tried to convert a
Michelle Bailey corner. Romero managed to successfully defend the attempt, but could not get a firm grasp of the ball. Hinden collected the loose ball and scored her first career goal to give St. Thomas a 3-0 lead. The score would remain final as the Fire were continuously held in check.
With the victory, the Bobcats hopes of postseason glory remain alive. Their next opponent is No. 2 seed Keiser. The semifinal is scheduled for this Friday at 1 P.M. The Seahawks previously defeated St. Thomas by the score of 3-2. The winner of the semifinal match will advance to The Sun Conference Championship this Saturday at 5 P.M. All remaining TSC playoff games will be played at the SCAD Athletic Complex in Savannah, Georgia.
